Medicare Open Enrollment is underway. From October 15 through December 7, 2026, people with Medicare can review their coverage and make certain changes for 2027. If you are a Connecticut senior—or helping a parent or loved one—this is a useful time to check that next year's plan still fits their doctors, prescriptions, budget, and needs.
Any changes made during this enrollment period generally take effect January 1, 2027. You do not have to change plans if your current coverage still works for you, but it is worth comparing the updated details rather than assuming everything will stay the same.
During the October 15–December 7 Open Enrollment Period, you can join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage coverage; move between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage; and join, drop, or switch a Medicare drug plan if you have Original Medicare. The options available to you depend on your situation and the plans offered in your area. Medicare explains the rules and effective dates on its enrollment periods page.
Medicare decisions can be personal and sometimes complicated. A plan that works well for a neighbor may not be right for you, especially if your prescriptions, doctors, or health needs differ. Compare your own information, and do not rely only on a plan's advertisements or a general recommendation.
Connecticut's Aging and Disability Resource Centers can help older adults, people with disabilities, and caregivers find information, check possible benefits, and discuss care options. Call 1-800-994-9422 and ask about Medicare counseling through CHOICES. You can also compare plans directly with the official Medicare Plan Compare tool or call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
For one-on-one assistance, have your Medicare card, current plan information, medication list, and preferred doctors and pharmacies nearby. Never share your Medicare number or financial information with an unexpected caller or someone pressuring you to enroll.
Set aside time before December 7 to compare next year's coverage and write down any questions. If you decide to change plans, follow the instructions from Medicare or the plan and keep a record of your confirmation. This article offers general information, not an individual plan recommendation; confirm coverage and costs with Medicare and the plan before enrolling.
